The city of Saint John’s has a rich culture as it is home to multiple ethnic groups such as Irish, English, French and Aboriginal peoples. The city was founded in 1630 by Sir George Calvert and established in its current location in 1793 when settlement occurred on the northeast side of Trinity Bay. It is believed that about 50% of Newfoundlanders are descendants of Irish immigrants who arrived during the 1800s while 20% are descended from French settlers who came in the 1700s. The remainder of the inhabitants include people with Scottish heritage or those who migrated from other parts of Canada or abroad. St John’s is very culturally diverse with residents speaking more than twenty languages.
