Oshawa is a city in Ontario that was amalgamated with other communities to form the new city of Oshawa. The population according to Statistics Canada census data is over 350,000 people. It is located on the shores of Lake Ontario, about 40 km east of Toronto. Oshawa has an industrial past and its major employers are General Motors Canada (which operates one of the largest assembly plants in Canada), Kellogg’s, RBC Insurance and Sun Parlor Grand Prix Raceway; however, these companies no longer have their headquarters within the boundaries of Oshawa. The name “Oshawa” comes from Ojibwa which means “to trade”.
